Throughout history, the story of Medea has fascinated composers, never more so than in France in the 17th and 18th centuries. I’m delighted to be joining the acclaimed Olivier Award-nominated Early Opera Company and Christian Curnyn for Bernier’s cantata Médée and excerpts from Charpentier’s magnificent opera of the same name at the Almeida Theatre on 4th October. Thrilled to be singing the role of Venus in the world premiere recording of J. C. Pepusch’s Venus and Adonis (1715) with The Harmonious Society of Tickle-Fiddle Gentlemen and Pippa Hyde (Adonis) and Richard Edgar-Wilson (Mars) this June for the Ramée label. This is a two-act English masque in the Italian style that would be the model for Handel’s Acis and Galatea. The work culminates in a dramatic fury scene for Venus. The earliest English opera with a complete set of original performing parts, it was composed as showpiece for two of the biggest stars of the London stage in the early eighteenth century, Margherita de l’Epine and Jane Barbier.. Last week I was delighted to jump-in for the Handel Festival to join the wonderful Laurence Cummings, Susanna Fairbairn, Maria Valdmaa, Timothy Nelson, Andrew Skidmore and Elizabeth Kenny for a sublime evening of Handel’s most extraordinary cantatas for The Arcadian Dream. I’m delighted to be joining a wonderful team of singers and musicians, performing the title role in the premiere of David Wallace’s wonderful new opera, Lucy (Dancing in the Dark). It’s a love story set in rural Ireland with music of sublime beauty and devastating power. The evening will begin with songs by Schubert and arias by Mozart, including Parto, parto from La Clemenza di Tito and Schubert’s Shepherd on the Rock, with the one act opera in the second half. It should be a great evening so please join us if you can. Very excited about our Oxford Lieder Recital on 15th October. Maciek O’Shea, Sholto Kynoch and I will be performing some of Schubert’s gems, all song settings of poetry written by his friends. This September, I’ll join Julian Perkins and Spiritato for a recording of this little known work by Henry Purcell’s younger brother Daniel. Written in 1701, it was one of the first operas to be performed in London and thanks to a new edition by William Russell we are able to bring this forgotten masterpiece back to life. The music is glorious and we hope this work will shed new light on an exciting and inventive composer working at a time of great musical and social change.
